Charles Daly

Charles Daly, Chairman - oil consultantCharles has spent a lifetime in the downstream oil business, working for many years in BP and Ultramar, initially in research then in logistics and refinery supply and subsequently in developing business internationally.

As well as working in the Netherlands, USA and Canada, he has in more recent years been based in London, where he has held senior management positions in a number of companies in the refining, supply/logistics, shipping and oil trading sectors.

An international oil market expert and consultant to established and emerging companies, he is a recognised authority on oil supply markets in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Russia. He has also been actively engaged in many business restructuring projects around the world.

Charles has extensive knowledge of financing and of legal matters pertaining to the oil industry and he is regularly called upon to serve in court as an expert witness in legal cases.

He was a founder member and the first vice-chairman, of the UK's International Petroleum Exchange and he has lectured on a wide range of oil-related subjects all over the world.

He was instrumental in creating the MSc course in Energy, Trade and Finance at the Cass Business School in London.

Dermot Campbell
Chief Operating Officer

Dermot Campbell, Chief Operating Officer & independant oil consultantDermot joined Channoil as a professional business, oil and financial consultant in 2011.

A trained accountant, he worked as a manager with Deloittes before joining BP in South Africa in 1985. He spent 14 years with the company there in roles ranging from chief accountant and planning, strategy and control manager, to retail asset and engineering manager. He was also a member of BPSA's executive committee.

All this has given him an excellent understanding of the downstream oil business in Africa. He also has extensive experience of negotiating with governments, thanks to his work at BPSA in representing the oil industry on pricing structure, margin negotiations and oil industry regulation/deregulation issues.

More recently, as a business consultant, he has helped several new enterprises establish themselves in South Africa, particularly in the oil retailing and gas sectors. Other recent projects have included a market study, capital raising and project implementation plan for an LPG plant, a study of the bunker market in the Middle East and East Africa, market studies in Poland and a study of the terminal/storage market in the Arabian Gulf.



Peter Hills
Senior Consultant

Peter Hills, Independent Oil Trading ConsultantPeter Hills has more than 40 years' experience in the downstream oil industry, combining a background of physical oil supply, trading and refining management with energy price risk management skills.

He began his career at Amoco UK, where he held a series increasingly senior roles ending as Supply Operations Manager. He left Amoco in 1979 and took up a variety of senior positions in international supply and trading oil companies and independent traders, and he was at one time managing director of P&O Oil Trading. Between 1990 and 1995 he managed the London energy futures and derivatives broking group for ED & F Man International and for most of that period he was a director of the International Petroleum Exchange in London.

Since 1995 he has operated as an independent consultant, advising clients on international oil markets and related business development projects. From 2003 he was Business Development Consultant for Nordic Storage AB, an oil storage company based in Scandinavia. His role encompassed liaison and negotiation with international overseas clients based outside Scandinavia and the development of new storage capacity for Nordic.

He joined Channoil as a senior consultant in 2012.  Key projects have included leading a team undertaking an operational audit of a Rotterdam oil storage terminal, market studies for terminal developments in Europe, Middle East and Africa (including a Djibouti bunker hub) and commercial due diligence on an oil trading company.


Steven Roberts
Senior Consultant

Steve has an Honours degree (BSc) in Mechanical Engineering and French from Bath University and is a downstream oil professional with an international career with Shell spanning some 30 years gained predominantly in Supply and Trading - specific roles included refinery scheduling at Geelong refinery, Australia and Supply Trading Manager and board member of the country management team in Shell Italia.

Between 2000-2010, Steve worked in Shell's corporate centre in London formulating the globalisation of Shell Supply chain strategy and in the role of Portfolio Manager, as responsible for many European M&A deals - including refinery divestments, marketing joint ventures and selected country exits.

Since 2011, Steve has worked as a consultant, providing strategic advice, oil market reviews and asset transactional advice/due-diligence to many established industry players.


Philip Nutman
Associate Consultant

Phil Nutman, oil and gas consultantPhilip has 28 years' experience in the oil and gas industry, including 18 years in advisory services, and is managing director of QED Gas Consulting, one of Channoil's strategic partners.

He has a BSc in civil engineering and also has an MBA degree. His early career was spent working in the oil, gas and power industries for British Gas and Total. Subsequently he was a director at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Gas Strategies in London.

Philip has led numerous consultancy projects, advising international oil and gas companies, governments and financial institutions on strategy, commercial negotiations, regulation, restructuring, valuation and other transactions.

His recent energy infrastructure projects have included gas market reforms, upstream M&A, LNG import projects, pre-feasibility studies of greenfield LNG plants, gas markets studies, investigating the scope for the development and/or commercialisation of oil and gas pipelines, and TPA to LNG terminals and pipeline networks.

Zoe Young 
Zoe Young, oil and gas consultantSenior Consultant

Zoe is an experienced chemical engineer with a strong background in oil and gas consultancy with a thorough knowledge of refining process and economics.

She has been an advisor to private companies and government ministries, an expert witness (including testimony at the International centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes) and a lecturer.

She is also a highly competent project manager with a history of bringing projects in on time and budget.  Areas of speciality include market studies, due diligence, asset evaluation, strategic advice and expert witness services covering refining, gas monetisation, LNG and petrochemicals.

Recent projects include a valuation of various crude oils, an assessment of ammonia urea markets and a review of global supply and demand patters for oil and gas products.

John Unsworth
Associate Consultant

John Unsworth, energy consultantJohn has 38 years' experience of establishing and leading energy and environment-related technical projects. He spent 32 years with Shell and six with British Coal, during which time he successfully introduced many important technology changes across the entire spectrum of the fuels business.

As technical manager for Shell's Global Fuels marketing unit, he was responsible for creating and maintaining a programme for the development of retail fuels, among them special formulations suitable for bio-fuels in Europe and Asia, and for high ethanol fuels in Brazil, the USA and Scandinavia. He was also responsible for introducing a new fuel brand, Shell 'Fuel Save', and he managed the company's commercial relationship with fuel additive suppliers. He was in charge of handling Shell's response to any challenges by regulators worldwide to advertising claims made by the company.

John is an internationally recognised expert on fuel product quality and on its impact on performance, local air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Experienced in external stakeholder management, he has acted as an advocate on technical fuel matters with various government institutions in Asia, Europe and the FSU.


John Young
Associate Consultant

John is well known in the Middle East through the contacts and relationships he has built up over his long career in the oil supply and trading business in the Middle East and Far East regions.

Over many years John has been an oil products trader and was responsible for setting up the regional office for BP in Singapore during 1979. Until 2005, he concentrated on trading products in the Middle East and Indian sub-continent (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh). He has visited most of the countries in the region and is very familiar with their logistics, operations, personnel and culture. He was invited by Kuwait Petroleum to in Kuwait from 2005-06 to provide on-the-job development for KPC's high potential staff.

John's more than 45 years experience in the oil industry makes him a valued member of Channoil's consultancy teams, especially when working on projects with a Middle East perspective.


Remko Schulte
Associate Consultant (HSE)

Remko Schulte, associate oil consultantRemko is an experienced HSE specialist who started his professional career as a project engineer at Esso Benelux in 1990. He has a BSc degree in mechanical engineering and a Masters in Occupational Health and Safety.

In the course of two decades in the oil industry, he has held a variety of business and engineering management positions, first at Esso and subsequently at Van der Sluijs (now Argos Energy), a supplier of oil products.

Since becoming an independent consultant in 2010, Remko has provided management coaching and other HSE-related services to a wide range of clients in the energy business, notably in the oil refining and tank storage sector, as well as to several government agencies. He can also act as a company's negotiator on health and safety issues with local and national authorities, fire brigades and labour inspectors.


Richard Johnstone
Associate Consultant

Richard has spent more than 30 years working in major oil industry organisations in both the upstream and downstream sectors. His expertise extends into all areas of oil supply and trading, and he is particularly experienced in the negotiation and operation of commercial contracts for oil and gas sales, lifting, production, processing, transportation and storage. After graduating from Oxford University, his career path took him through a number of leading energy companies including BP, Kuwait National Petroleum Company, BNOC, the Oil & Pipelines Agency and British Gas. At various times his senior management responsibilities covered supply, crude oil sales, international marketing, transportation and oil trading.

In 1997 Richard set up his own consultancy business and since then has worked with a wide range of organisations in the petroleum industry and related sectors.

He is a key member of Channoil's lecture team at the Cass Business School in London and he has delivered many training programmes and seminars on all aspects of oil markets, supply and trading in Europe, the FSU, North America, Africa and Asia.
